Another disappointing tie match for Liverpool at Anfield. Wigan came in with what is rapidly becoming the standard strategy: play tight, compressed defense, don’t worry about possession, and hope for the counter. A 50th-minute beauty by Torres saw things looking up for the Reds but then, inexplicably, possession and calm left the home side, clearances started to get worse (and they weren’t great to begin with) and we gave up a scudsy little goal in about the 77th minute.
Sigh. Another missed opportunity to take full points away from a side fighting relegation battles.
I’m beginning to wonder if Rafa Benitez is not a better tactician than a strategist, whatever that implies.
