Pathable Needs To Work On SEO

SEO

Does anyone else think it’s weird that you can enter the terms

pathable seattle mind camp

into Google, and get four pages of results, NOT ONE of which is this page?

http://pathable.com/events/seattle-mind-camp

The Pathable home page for Seattle Mind Camp 5 has had over 100 attendees sign up, probably thousands of visits over the last couple weeks, and STILL doesn’t show up in Google – at all.

UPDATE: It gets stranger. A search on the terms “pathable seattle bar camp” returns the Pathable BarCamp page as the #1 result. Weird. I wonder what the difference is?

I think it goes back to SEO 101: there has to be a link somewhere on the web to a page, or you have to manually tell Google a page exists, otherwise it won’t get indexed. Because Pathable regards itself as a “white label” service, where the branding and promotion belongs to the event host, we don’t provide links to individual events we host from our site. Many event hosts, Seattle Mind Camp included, choose not to link directly to the Pathable site for their event, instead choosing to e-mail attendees after they’ve signed up. The result: we’re off Google’s radar.

This is probably poor planning on our site for a few reasons:

    - Attendees who don’t have the e-mail with the link handy have trouble finding us again
    - Potential attendees who want to get a sense for who has already committed to go and what they’re talking about don’t get access to this valuable promotional tool
    - Pathable loses the overall good SEO juju that comes from lots of folks linking to your pages.

Thanks for pointing it out, it’s something we’ll want to address soon.
