SQL Server 2008 Installation Error: Remove SQL Express Tools

Software

When installing SQL Server 2008 tonight, I ran into an error toward the end of the installation:

The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.

Another blog post suggested going to the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and starting the remove process for SQL Server 2005. This didn’t work for me – there was no option to just uninstall the workstation tools, only the 2005 database engine itself (which I didn’t want to do).

What did work for me: In the Add/Remove Programs dialog, uninstall the SQL Server 2005 Management Tools Express item.

I have the same problem not having a tools option to remove, but I also do not have an item called SQL Server 2005 Management Tools Express item. Could you have possibly have meant SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express. When I try to uninstall this one it tells me Microsoft Sql Server 2005 Tools is dependent on it. Did you get that as well. Thanks for this posting, I think it will get me closer to an answer.

I had to uninstall the SQL Server 2005 Management Tools, however when I installed the 2008 Management Tools I was still able to view the 2005 server and all the network server. Seems logical not to have two versions of the management tools after all.

Hi, your solution worked for me!
I´m just wondering what could be the impact of this step.

I had the same as Leila (remove SQL Server Management Tools, 2005 is not mentioned), but afterwards the installation of SQL 2008 goes well …

I had the same problem as the author above and removing “Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio” solved the problem.
